Samuel Gawith - Finest Kendal Twist (Tinned)

Black Pigtail - Brown Pigtail - Brown No. 4 - Black XX
Samuel Gawith Logo
The Samuel Gawith "Finest Kendal Twist" History

For over two centuries, the blenders and spinners of Samuel Gawith, Kendal, have been producing the famous Kendal Twists. over, both underground and on the ground, have been chewing our Pigtails and Bogies, whilst pipe smokers have savoured the rich flavours and slow burning characteristics of the thick Brown No.4 and Black XX. The process begins with the selection of our best quality, dark fired long filler leaf from various tobacco regions, together with selected flaw-free wrapper leaf, stripped of their main stem. The spinners prepare and then feed both filler and wrapper into the age-old spinning machine. This process cannot be mechanised or automated as it takes the experience and dexterity of two pairs of hands to produce an even "rope of tobacco".

The rope is spun into a roll, which is naturally brown - this is Brown Twist. Other rolls are subjected to a period of several hours in steam pressure whilst wrapped in rope & paper to prevent any flavour escaping and to seal in the sugars and oils naturally present in this leaf. This final product after cooling is a very black, pliable roll, giving a rich, mellow flavour.

According to customer taste, various flavours can be added to the finished product. Some of our popular flavours are black cherry, rum, whiskey and apple. All twists are available pre-packed or on the roll.

Because the process is almost entirely by hand, quality control ensures consistency of excellence.

The pouch aroma is both oily and spicy. Due to the tiny diameter of the twist, you will have to cut so many little discs in order to fill a small bowl. You can easily keep the discs whole, without any rubbing. Once you cut them, you see a very deep reddish brown color, especially under direct light. It's truly a strong tobacco; the first puff is overwhemling; the taste settles down gradually and becomes increasingly sweetish, spicy, and creamy. At a certain point, the strength starts growing on you again till the end of the bowl. Ideally it should be smoked in a small bowl, and after a good meal.

The pouch aroma does tell you that this is going to be some potent smoke, and it is, at least for me. It smells of fully matured, strong VAs, with two shades of brown. It was a bit moist, as most of these tobaccos, but 10 minutes in the open air was enough to get it down to the right level. The taste at first is rather overwhelming and is similar to that of aged, spicy cigars. The strength is felt at first mainly in the throat, without being harsh. It settles down in the course of the smoke, and the sweetness becomes increasingly evident and attractive. It looks like a tobacco that could bite the tongue if puffed on too slowly. I recommend packing it lightly and smoking it in a small to medium size bowl.

This is a truly delicious twist. It's jet-black and sinister-looking; however, it smokes so smoothly. When sliced thin, rubbed out well, and smoked in a small pipe, it smokes yet more evenly and its strength is less overwhelming. The taste is "oily", combined with a delicate touch of sweetness and spiciness; the aroma is natural and sweet, both smoked and unsmoked. It's a serious tobacco, especially suited for those who are used to full-bodied pressed Virginias. I recommend smoking it after a good meal, unless you know the limits (lack thereof) of your stomach (and also head!). The level of nicotine makes it a tobacco for the brave (though less than the level in the Brown Twist).

Comment:

This is by far Samuel Gawith's strongest tobacco. I, therefore, do not recommend to the faint-hearted! The twist is not as compact as the "Black XX"; so, preparing it for maximum smoking pleasure might require a bit more work. I recommend cutting it as a fine as possible, and then smoking it slowly in a small to medium size bowl. If you find it to be a bit too strong, you might want to try adding it to another mixture. It could add a nice taste and full-bodiedness to a mild blend. If you're into really full-bodied tobaccos, you should give this one a try.
